As a teacher, Ida Odinga taught many girls, and one among them was Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso.
Due to the close relationship, Ida enjoyed with Joyce, it took her several hours, to gather strength, and write a condolence message for her student, Joyce.
In a tweet and infographic, Ida mourned her student, who beat many odds to become Member of Parliament (MP) and Governor.
She uploaded the tweet at 9 am on Tuesday, roughly 15 hours after the announcement of Laboso’s death was made on Monday at 3 pm.
“I mourn a student, a colleague, and a friend,” said Ida, wife to ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga.
Ida remembers Governor Laboso
“I first met Joyce when I was teaching at Kenya High School and the young lady enrolled as my student. Since then, our relationship grew into friendship,” she said.
Ida expounded on her knowledge of Joyce, showing that she was a teacher who keenly followed on the exploits of her student.
“Against all odds, she was elected MP for Sotik. She broke the clan barrier that plagues many women in politics and was able to rise to the position of Governor of Bomet despite being married in Nyanza.”
Ida greatly appreciated the growth curve of Joyce and as an example that can be emulated, especially in her career.
“She is proof that African women can soar beyond negative stereotypes if given equal opportunities. Kenya has lost a pillar that was the symbol of unity and development.”
Mrs. Odinga ended her message by saying, “I have personally lost a great friend.”
