Samia Suluhu says swearing-in as President was ‘most difficult’

Unscripted life lies ahead for the first woman President in the East Africa Region Samia Suluhu Hassan. She has to walk where no woman has walked and make a trail that other women and girls can follow.

But this is not a strange terrain for Samia Suluhu who in 2000 served as the only high-ranking female minister in the Tanzania Cabinet, and also the first female Vice President in the region.

The 61-year-old is the first female President in Tanzania and the East Africa Region after the death of President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli who died from heart complications.

In her inaugural speech on March 19, 2021, after being sworn in as President, Samia Suluhu mourned the Late President Magufuli and said praised him for teaching her so much during their time together in the office.

“We have lost a great leader, who loved development and a true son,” said President Samia Suluhu.

President Samia said the President would be buried at Chato district in North-Western Tanzania on 25th March 2021.

She comforted the mother of the late President, Mama Susan Magufuli, and wife, Janet Magufuli in her speech for the loss of a son and husband, respectively.

President Suluhu was in deep grief and said the swearing-in was the most difficult in her life, yet, despite ushering her into the highest office in the country.

President Samia Suluhu honoured the Late President for his leadership and service to the people and the United Republic of Tanzania.

JOURNEY IN PUBLIC OFFICE

Samia Suluhu first ran for public office in the year 2000. She became a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives as a special seat member. She was appointed a Minister by President Amani Karume. In 2005, Samia Suluhu was reelected and reappointed as a minister.

In 2010, Samia Suluhu won a seat on the National Assembly. President Jakaya Kikwete appointed her Minister of State for Union Affairs. And in 2014, she was elected Vice-Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly that was drafting Tanzania’s new constitution.

One year later (2015) President John Pombe Magufuli chose her as her running mate in the elections. Following the death of President Magufuli in 2021, she assumed the Presidency to the end of the term in office in 2025.
