The number of women who have expressed a desire to lead counties in Kenya is growing as the 2022 general elections in Kenya draw nearer.
Sabina Chege in Muranga will campaign for the county seat. Governor Mwangi Wa Iria has occupied the office for the last two terms. Sabina has served the people of Muranga as their County woman MP for ten years.
In Nakuru, Susan Kihika hopes to unseat Lee Kinyanjui who has served for one term after he won against the first County Governor Kinuthia Mbugua. Susan is the current County Senator and also served in the Nakuru County Assembly as Speaker.
Bomet Woman Representative Joyce Korir hopes to become the second female Governor in the County. Joyce Laboso served as Governor before her demise after suffering from cancer. Joyce formerly served as Councillor.
Aisha Jumwa, the current Malindi MP, will seek election as the Kilifi Governor. The current County Governor is Amason Kingi.
Anne Waiguru will seek reelection as the Kirinyaga Governor despite the contest posed by the current Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici. Anne formerly served as Kenya’s Devolution Cabinet Secretary.
