Cate Waruguru is known for her sharp tongue, quick mind, and agility in the world of politics. A student of theology, looking at her CV, and listening to her in political rallies, one can easily pick out her knowledge of the scriptures. However, on the flipside, sometimes, she utters earth-shaking statements, questioning her Christian faith that requires adherents to be careful the words that exit their mouths.
Waruguru came into the limelight when she won the seat of Laikipia Woman Representative and was in parliament 2017 to 2022. She, then vied for position of Constituency MP, Laikipia East, in the 2022 elections but lost to Mwangi Kiunjuri.
Her name then reappeared in the public limelight in the list of names presented by President William Ruto of those who would become Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS). The positions of CAS were, however, declared unconstitutional, rendering Waruguru jobless.
Not one to lose heart, Waruguru went deep into his religious network and was photographed attending prayer meetings, and fellowships with local and international preachers, including the Rhema Feast Festival.
Eventually, when the political fight against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua intensified, calling for his impeachment, Waruguru took a strategic position as a fierce defence of the Deputy President. She accompanied the DP to roadside meetings, and church services, and used her lethal tongue to tell off the DP’s detractors. Waruguru has stood firm on the side of DP Rigathi, even as calls for his impeachment continue.
As the nation awaits to see if the calls for impeachment will fall flat unsuccessful, or sail through, the political future of Waruguru is also something to watch. Will the lioness from Laikipia roar again in the country or be reduced to a cat’s purr?
