US Ambassador Meg Whitman visits IEBC offices at the Anniversary Towers in Nairobi

At the height of the impeachment motion of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, Rigathi Gachagua, and an ongoing debate about the operationalization of the country’s electoral body, the US Ambassador in Kenya Meg Whitman visited the IEBC offices.

The IEBC updated their Twitter account @IEBCKenya with pictures of the Ambassador happily interacting with the IEBC officials and staff at their Anniversary Towers office in the Capital, Nairobi.

“The Commission today hosted the @USAmbKenya H.E. Meg Whitman for a meeting at Anniversary Towers to discuss areas of mutual collaboration,” read the social media update.

The commission is instrumental in the politics and governance of the nation, sitting at the heart of electoral justice during the general elections that take place in the country after five years where several seats are hotly contested – Member of Parliament (MP), Member of County Assembly (MCA), President, County Woman Representative, Governor, and Senator.

In conversation, the Commission Secretary and CEO Marjan H. Marjan highlighted the importance of assistance from development partners like USAID, saying that their support played a crucial role in facilitating the Commission’s operations.

The composition of the IEBC has come into sharp focus following the impeachment motion of the Deputy President, noting the crucial role the commission plays in approving the nominee for the second most powerful office in the land.
