Dr. Mercy Mwangangi has been named the new Chief Executive Officer of Kenya’s Social Health Authority (SHA), a move that signals a renewed commitment to improving healthcare access and equity nationwide.

Dr. Mwangangi is no stranger to the health sector. With an impressive track record in public health leadership, she previously served as Chief Administrative Secretary at the Ministry of Health, where she became a familiar and trusted face during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her calm yet authoritative presence and ability to clearly communicate complex public health matters made her a standout leader during a time of national uncertainty. She also brings with her experience from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), where she contributed to shaping Kenya’s health financing landscape.

Her appointment to lead the SHA comes after a highly competitive recruitment process that attracted 92 applicants from a range of professional backgrounds. After a rigorous evaluation, 12 candidates were shortlisted for interviews. Dr. Mwangangi’s deep understanding of health systems, coupled with her visionary leadership and practical experience, earned her the top spot.

As CEO of the newly formed Social Health Authority, she will oversee the implementation of Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through the new social health insurance framework. It’s a role that carries high expectations—and even higher stakes—as the country looks to build a health system that leaves no one behind.
