A Nigerian High Court sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of culpable homicide in connection with her tragic death on April 8, 2022.

Osinachi, best known for her powerful vocals in the gospel hit “Ekwueme”, which has amassed over 136 million views on YouTube, was a lead singer at Dunamis International Gospel Centre. She also featured in several beloved worship songs, including “Nara Ekele” and “You No Dey Use Me Play.”

Behind her soaring voice and public ministry, however, was a harrowing private struggle. Following her death, disturbing details emerged about the abuse she allegedly endured throughout her marriage. Gospel artist Frank Edwards revealed that Osinachi had been in a violent and emotionally damaging relationship for years. Despite support from friends and colleagues, she remained trapped.

Her producer, Sunny Pee, disclosed further heartbreaking details—how her husband often withheld her earnings, abandoned her without transport or money after studio sessions, and deliberately cut her off from those who tried to help. She had reportedly asked Sunny to speak to her pastor, but he was unable to get through, lacking direct ties to the church leadership.

Allegations also surfaced of a dismissive response from authorities when reports of the abuse were made. Some officials were said to be tired of the “ongoing saga.” Her husband’s jealousy reportedly ran so deep that he accused fellow ministers of inappropriate behavior during ministry trips, further isolating her and making it nearly impossible for others to intervene.

Still, Osinachi stayed. Perhaps she hoped for change, or perhaps she feared the judgment of a society that often romanticizes endurance over escape.
