The 24-year-old, who is also the daughter of a church pastor, was reportedly ambushed by an attacker who poured a corrosive substance on her, leaving her with severe facial injuries. She is currently receiving specialized treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is fighting for her life.
Police have since arrested the main suspect, identified as Elvis Opiyo, following a coordinated operation in Kibera. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect was captured after authorities set up a trap. He is now being held at Kibera Police Station as investigations continue.
Reports indicate that the suspect allegedly planned the attack and hired another person to carry it out. Members of the public responded quickly after the incident and managed to corner him as he tried to escape. Police later rescued him from an angry mob before taking him into custody.
According to reports, Mary Claire and the suspect were once in a relationship. The suspect, who is said to be married with two children, had allegedly supported her through college. However, their relationship later ended, and police believe the attack may have been a revenge mission following the breakup.
Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
