Uasin Gishu Women Representative Gladys Shollei has called on Kenyans to boycott health services offered at the prestigious Nairobi Hospital.
This is after the hospital released an ‘all-male’ list of their Board of Directors that is dated Friday, November 29, 2019.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors is Dr. Wilfred Irungu Ndirangu and his Vice Dr. Chris Bichage. The other six members are Dr. Stephen Ochiel, Mr. Victor Opiyo, Mr. Charles Kariuki, Eng. Maxwell Odongo, Mr. Robert Shaw and Amb. Charles Amira.
There is no woman in the eight-member board!
County MP Shollei expressed her displeasure on Twitter. She wrote, “On behalf of the Women of Kenya, I wish to protest against the composition of the board of the Nairobi Hospital.”
“I call upon all women to boycott Nairobi Hospitals countrywide. Are you saying there is not a single qualified woman in Kenya to sit in your board!?” she asked.
MP Shollei was the Registrar of the Judiciary and her view on issues in the country is weighty due to her rich background in legal affairs.
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 is all about achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.
Despite strides being made in its achievement, women and girls continue to suffer discrimination and violence in many parts of the world as it is happening at the Nairobi Hospital.
“Noting that in a population of 48 million Kenyans, more than 50% are women and girls, the place of women in such an important board in the health sector should not be allowed to operate without the input of a woman,” added Jemima Wangui, a student and resident of Kiambu County.
