9-Year-Old Shantel Waruguru

A nine-year-old girl, Shantel Waruguru, who went missing in Mathira, has been found murdered, in a case that has shocked residents of Kianjogu Village and the wider community.

Shantel was reported missing on Saturday after she failed to return home. Her family immediately launched a search, joined by neighbors and local leaders. During the search, clothing believed to belong to Shantel—including a panty her mother confirmed she was wearing that day—was discovered a few metres from a house belonging to the main suspect, identified as Njuguna. A boxer suspected to belong to the suspect was also found at the scene.

Officers from DCI Kiamachimbi Police Station visited the location, collected key evidence including a mattress, and arrested the suspect. Investigators recorded statements from four young girls who were last seen with Shantel. According to their accounts, the suspect allegedly gave Shantel KSh 10 to buy sweets, after which she was not seen again.

Shantel’s body was later discovered dumped in a latrine. The suspect has denied all allegations. He was arraigned in court on Monday, where police requested 14 days to complete investigations, including forensic analysis by the Government Chemist. The court granted the request as investigations continue.

Authorities have assured the public that justice will be pursued, as the community mourns the tragic loss of a young life.
