Shayla Chabet, a student at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nyeri campus, is reported to have spent time with a university student in Nyeri before the two later met again in Karatina. They are said to have spent the day together and later went out at night.

CCTV footage captured her final moments as she left a house in Rafina heading towards town. The man believed to be the last person seen with her was recorded following shortly behind and diverting her route.
Reports indicate that the two had been drinking before leaving a club. The male companion later claimed they were attacked by unknown individuals, but alleged that he managed to escape, leaving Chabet behind.
Her body was discovered on Sunday morning by a farm worker in a nearby farm. Investigators say she was found with her neck wrapped in her trousers and a belt.
Police have since arrested a suspect identified as Vincent Bett, a student at Karatina University. He is currently being held for 14 days as investigations continue.
Authorities say the suspect’s account of being attacked and robbed has been contradicted by CCTV footage and mobile phone location data placing him near the crime scene.
The body has been moved to the morgue pending a postmortem examination as detectives in Nyeri County continue with investigations.
