Martha Karua was born on April 22, 1957, in Kirinyaga County, Kenya, Karua attended the University of Nairobi where she earned a law degree. She went on to become a lawyer and was later admitted to the Kenyan bar. She began her political journey in the 1990s. She was first elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gichugu Constituency in 1992. In 2022, Martha Karua was chosen as the running mate for Raila Odinga, a leading presidential candidate. This made her the first woman in Kenya’s history to be nominated as a deputy presidential candidate by a major political party. She is a politician and lawyer with three decades of accomplishments, she became one of Kenya’s best-known female leaders, fighting for human rights, women’s empowerment, and legal change. Karua had a reputation for her firm stand against corruption and her unwavering commitment to advancing democratic principles, and as such she became a beacon of hope for many in Kenya.l
