The news was announced by Raila’s sister, Ruth Odinga, who shared that Beryl died on Tuesday, November 25, at a Nairobi hospital after a long illness. She did not give details about the cause of death.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga… While we are deeply saddened, we take comfort knowing she is safe in the Lord’s arms,” Ruth said.
Beryl was the daughter of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mama Mary Ajuma Oginga. She was mother to Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurus. She had been in and out of hospital before she finally passed on.
Although she came from a famous political family, Beryl lived a quiet life away from the public. She was a professional teacher and also trained as a lawyer. She is known as the only member of the Odinga family who studied in Kenya. Beryl held important positions, including serving as the Chairperson of Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSCO).
In 1974, she married real estate businessman Otieno Abala, but they later separated. It is unclear if she remarried.
Her death comes only six weeks after the passing of Raila Odinga in India on October 15, 2025, making this a very difficult time for the family.
