Many women leaders have shaped their leadership skills as nominated leaders, and later won competitive elected positions.
Political parties are the foundation of politicians with similar ideologies coming together and becoming one, through a party.
It is also through political parties that elections are won or lost. Parties also draft manifestos of their vision for their region affecting the lives of millions of people.
It is from this background that Nominated MP Halima Mucheke stressed on the importance of political parties in a nation.
MP Mucheke said that she was nominated because the Jubilee party was strong and had the opportunity to nominate women whom they felt would make an impact in the nation or their regions.
“I am a nominated MP because Jubilee is a strong party, and they had several slots for nominations. I strongly encourage politicians to build strong political parties that will impact society, and make sense in all seasons, whether we have elections or not.”
“I also thank the senior MPs we found in parliament, like Jayne Kihara, who selflessly taught us the standing orders and other procedures in the House,” said MP Mucheke who was speaking in Naivasha during a meeting of Inua Mama, Jenga Taifa members.
Among women who have grown through the ranks are Trans Nzoia women representative Janet Nangabo who was a councillor, Laikipia women representative Cate Waruguru who was a nominated MCA and Bomet Women representative Joyce Korir who was a councillor.
The three are today powerful public speakers.
A strong political party, that wins many elective seats, also enjoys the luxury of having more nomination slots as compared to other parties.
There are different ways that women can rise to leadership positions. They include competitive politics, the fulfilment of the two-third gender rule and through political party’s nomination opportunities.
